Even though she’s engaged to Walter, she sends Sam a letter. East Coast reporter Annie Reed is also touched and believes Sam may be her soul mate. Single women across America hear Sam’s poignant story and write to him wanting to meet. Sam gets on the phone and tells the psychologist that although it’s been tough, he and Jonah are doing OK. Lonely Sam is ready to start dating again, but still missing his mother, an upset Jonah calls a psychologist on a national radio talk show. A hugely enjoyable romantic comedy, directed by the writer of When Harry Met Sally, this attacks both funny bone and tear-ducts with equal success.

Soon, 2,000 calls and letters flood the station from interested women. After talking to the host, Jonah persuades his reluctant Dad to go on the air as well. But he remains listless and mournful, so one evening Jonah phones a national radio call-in show to find his father a new wife.
Young architect Sam Baldwin (Hanks) has recently lost his beloved wife to cancer, and moved from Chicago to Seattle with their 8-year-old son Jonah (Malinger) to start a new life.
